LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Whitney Houston's ex-husband Bobby Brown struck back at claims he was responsible for getting the pop star hooked on drugs or that he somehow played a role in her cocaine-fueled death in February.
'I'm not the one that got Whitney on drugs, at all,' Brown said in an interview to be aired this week on the 'Today' show on U.S. television network NBC.
'I'm not the reason she's gone,' he added.
Houston, 48, was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub on February11 from what authorities called accidental drowning brought on by cocaine use and heart disease. White powder and drug paraphernalia were found in the bathroom where she died.
The singer had spoken publicly about a long battle with cocaine, marijuana and crack, particularly during her tempestuous 15-year marriage to Brown. They divorced in 2007, but some fans and members of Houston's family have blamed Brown for her untimely death.
In his first TV interview since the singer died, Brown, 43, told 'Today' show host Matt Lauer that he had been off drugs for seven years and was hurt to hear that Houston had been using cocaine.
'I was hurt ... because, you know, me being off of narcotics for the last seven years - I felt that she was, you know, I didn't know she was struggling with it still. But at the same time, you know - listen, it's a hard fight,' he said.
Brown said drugs were part of Houston's life before he met her in 1991. 'I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn't the one that got Whitney on drugs at all,' he said.
'So this was a part of her life before you and she got together?' Lauer asked.
'Way, way before. Yeah ... It's just, it's just unexplainable - how one could, you know, (say that I) got her addicted to drugs. I'm not the reason she's gone,' Brown replied.
Brown said Houston had a 'glow about her' when he last saw her about a week before she died. He was at a restaurant having dinner with their daughter, Bobbi Kristina.
'She just looked like she was in a good place,' he said about the 'I Will Always Love You' singer.
The interview will be aired on 'Today' show on Wednesday and Thursday.
Brown turned up for Houston's funeral in New Jersey but left before the service started saying he felt unwanted and disrespected.
Six weeks after Houston died, Brown was arrested and charged in Los Angeles with drunk driving and driving on a suspended license. Brown has pleaded not guilty.

Rolling Stone overhauls album ranking, Kanye stars
LONDON (Reuters) - Three Kanye West albums have made it on to the latest edition of Rolling Stone magazine's authoritative '500 Greatest Albums of All Time' list, placing him among the greats of popular music.
The new ranking, which combines a 2003 list (updated in 2005) with a later survey of the 2000s, saw two Radiohead records join the elite club, while long-established names including Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan also had albums added.
Rolling Stone has published the list, along with details of the albums and several new recording histories based on first-hand accounts, in 'bookazine' format available for $11.99 on newsstands between Friday and July 25 in the United States.
As with any survey that tries to put arguably the greatest rock and roll recordings into a particular order, there was plenty of heated debate among the journalists and editors who came up with the final list.
Much of the hard work had been done, however, with hundreds of reporters, executives and musicians involved in the earlier surveys.
'We had arguments in the office, and I hope those arguments are replicated elsewhere,' said Christian Hoard, a senior editor at Rolling Stone, of the selection process.
'These special issues are great sellers,' he told Reuters. 'But they also turn people on to music they haven't heard, and hopefully start fun arguments too.
'People like to get angry about these 'best' lists. It was really a great deal of fun to make.'
WEST THE BIG WINNER
The big beneficiary was U.S. hip-hop star West, who saw 2005 album Late Registration, The College Dropout (2004) and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) make it to the top 500.
In total, 30 albums were added and 30 taken away, with the casualties including several artists well-represented on the list already and whose 'lesser' albums have now been dropped.
The highest entry among recent albums was West's Late Registration at No. 118.
Asked whether the relatively low position of recently released albums reflected a barren period for great rock and pop, Hoard replied:
'My personal opinion is no. Music is as inspirational as it's ever been.
'Things get clearer as the years pass. If you held this poll in 10 years, say, Arcade Fire could be a lot higher and the same could be said of Kanye West. Reputation and time definitely help an album, especially with pollers like ours.'

New breed of boy bands takes over airwaves
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Boy band fever is storming the music scene in the United States, led by the Brits who are breaking away from the slick, squeaky-clean image of old as they battle to become America's newest pin-ups.
The five young men of The Wanted take on their baby-faced rivals One Direction with their self-titled debut EP released this week, following One Direction's No. 1 first album on the U.S. Billboard charts last month.
It's more than 10 years since New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys and N'Sync ruled the U.S. music scene and sent hordes of screaming young girls to record stores.
In Britain, boy bands have never gone out of fashion, although the new breed appears to have grown up.
If One Direction are the co-ordinated, clean-cut, media-savvy boy band, The Wanted are the rebellious antidote, uncensored by their team and left to win over audiences by goofing around with each other, and the media.
'We're different, we all play instruments, we don't dance and we don't dress very well,' The Wanted's Tom Parker told Reuters.
The Wanted - Parker, Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness and Nathan Sykes, aged between 19 and 23 - were put together after mass auditions in the U.K. in 2009, and are managed by Scooter Braun, the mastermind behind Canadian teen idol Justin Bieber.
'All the acts that I manage are built organically and they all get to be exactly who they are,' said Braun, 30, who encourages The Wanted to be open about drinking, partying and dating girls.
'I used to be a party promoter the last time boy bands were huge, and I knew a lot of those guys, and they like to party and drink and do all that stuff too. But they always had to hide it, and I think it's refreshing to see a boy band that doesn't hide it and that doesn't care,' Braun added.
LADS HAVING FUN
One Direction - formed of Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, all aged between 18 and 20 - were put together in 2010, and are managed by Simon Cowell.
One Direction's image is more carefully groomed and choreographed in the vein of the boy band stereotype but that didn't stop a controversial romance between Styles and a British TV presenter 15 years his senior, prior to the band making their U.S. debut.
'We don't mind at all being called a boy band, we're just lads in a band. But I think we're trying to do something a little bit different...it's a bit more relaxed, lads having fun, we do what we want,' said One Direction's Payne.
Both bands fall squarely into the pop genre, with One Direction embracing innocent, fun love songs such as with their lead single 'What Makes You Beautiful,' which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Wanted have taken a more adult route, with heavier dance beats and raunchier music videos such as their single 'Glad You Came,' peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
'Their music is really different to ours and I think anyone can see that, and you can like one or the other or both,' said The Wanted's McGuiness.
'A lot of people expect boy bands to cater music exclusively to young girls...we accept that a lot of young girls do like us, but we respect their musical choice as much as we respect a 50-year-old dude,' McGuiness added.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A Sony-led consortium won EU approval on Thursday to buy EMI's music publishing business for $2.2 billion, on the condition that it sell the worldwide publishing rights of artists including Robbie Williams and Lenny Krativz.
Sony, with Blackstone Group, Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Development Co. Raine Group and music and film mogul David Geffen, won the bidding for EMI Publishing last year in a deal that will put Sony top in global music publishing.
European competition regulators approved the deal after the consortium proposed selling the rights to four back-catalogues, including the musical works of 12 contemporary artists.
The catalogues to be sold are Virgin UK, Virgin Europe, Virgin U.S. and Famous Music UK and include artists such as Gary Barlow, Ozzy Osbourne, Ben Harper, Placebo and The Kooks, as well as Lenny Kravitz and Robbie Williams.
'Sony and Mubadala have offered to divest valuable and attractive catalogues containing bestselling titles as well as works of successful and promising authors,' said Joaquin Almunia, the European commissioner for competition issues.
'I am therefore satisfied that the competitive dynamics in the online music publishing business will be maintained so as to ensure consumer choice and cultural diversity.'
An initial investigation by the Commission had concluded that the deal was not conducive to fair competition, but Sony and its partners agreed to divest more assets, depending on how much is raised from the asset sales.
'The Commission therefore concluded that, subject to these divestments, the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European economic area or any substantial part of it,' the Commission said.
The catalogues are likely to be auctioned off in the coming months, sources close to the negotiations said.
Before the deal, Sony was the fourth biggest player in music publishing, behind Universal Music Group, EMI and Warner Music.
The agreement will push it into first place, owning the rights to about 3 million songs such as 'New York, New York' and Adele's recent smash 'Rolling in the Deep'.
Citigroup is selling EMI after taking over the group when its previous owner, private equity group Terra Firma, defaulted on borrowings from the investment bank.
Impala, a trade organization representing Europe's independent music companies, had urged the EU regulator to veto the deal because it would give Sony excessive power and result in an overly concentrated market.

Levon Helm, longtime drummer in The Band, dies at 71
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Drummer Levon Helm, a longtime member of The Band, died on Thursday after a long battle with throat cancer. He was 71.
Helm, who also toured with Ringo Starr's All Star band in the 1980s and won a 2011 Grammy Award, had canceled recent gigs due to his health.
'Levon Helm passed peacefully this afternoon,' Barbara O'Brien, Helm's manager, said in a statement. 'He was surrounded by family, friends and band mates and will be remembered by all he touched as a brilliant musician and a beautiful soul.'
The drummer's death came days after his wife Sandy and daughter Amy on April 17 posted a message on his official website saying that Helm 'is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey.'
Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998. At one point, the Arkansas native lost his voice to cancer and he almost lost his Woodstock, New York home due to mounting medical bills.
Instead, he turned his home, better known as The Barn, into a weekly concert hall that attracted sell-out crowds, big names such as Emmylou Harris and Kris Kristofferson and ended up both paying the mortgage and rejuvenating Helm's career.
Helm was best known for his years with The Band, where he played drums, guitar and mandolin and sang until the group's 1976 'The Last Waltz' farewell performance, which was filmed by director Martin Scorsese.

The drummer's death came days after his wife Sandy and daughter Amy on April 17 posted a message on his official website saying that Helm 'is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey.'
Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998. At one point, the Arkansas native lost his voice to cancer and he almost lost his Woodstock, New York home due to mounting medical bills.
Instead, he turned his home, better known as The Barn, into a weekly concert hall that attracted sell-out crowds, big names such as Emmylou Harris and Kris Kristofferson and ended up both paying the mortgage and rejuvenating Helm's career.
Helm was best known for his years with The Band, where he played drums, guitar and mandolin and sang until the group's 1976 'The Last Waltz' farewell performance, which was filmed by director Martin Scorsese.

A Minute With: Carly Simon on writing songs and books
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Singer-songwriter Carly Simon, 66, known for 1970s smash hits like 'You're So Vain,' is being honored this week with the prestigious ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Founders Award.
The award comes four decades after Simon released her first solo record, the self-titled 'Carly Simon' with the break-through hit 'That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be,' followed quickly by her 'Anticipation,' album and then 'No Secrets' with the single, 'You're So Vain.'
The winner of multiple Grammys and an Oscar for her song 'Let the River Run' from the 1988 film 'Working Girl,' Simon is the daughter of the late Richard Simon, co-founder of book publisher Simon & Schuster. She also has penned five childrens books and is currently working on an autobiography.
Simon spoke with Reuters by phone from her house in Martha's Vineyard about her upcoming book, her fear of performing and her battle with breast cancer in 1997-1998.
Q: Did having cancer affect your career, your creativity and writing?
A: 'There's a bigger story about the breast cancer than the cancer. It's about relationships.'
Q: How did your relationships change?
A: 'I wasn't treated well. I think I was let go of certain jobs and affiliations. It was very confusing but everything was smoothed over because people are smart and don't want you to be hurt. People were saying it's got nothing to do with that. It is hard to disregard.
Q: How did you deal with that?
A: 'It was like I was the disappearing woman. When I went to the Grammys that year, I noticed how many people avoided me. There were a lot of people who were just not looking at me. It was the first time I was out in public since I'd been diagnosed. The record that I had (just) put out had been dropped and the head of my record label didn't look at me. It's like there were masks on. I had disappeared in the audience. Some people were so scared they moved away from me in their hearts and minds.'
Q: What did you work on after that?
A: 'Then I went into a wonderful period where I did some work for Disney on the Pooh films. It was about three years of work. They were not big movies, but I got a lot of good feeling in my heart. And then I moved lock, stock and barrel to Martha's Vineyard ... moving to the Vineyard was like coming home to Tara. The land held me in its embrace.'
Q: Do you plan to sing at the ASCAP event? It's well known that you are stage shy.
A: 'My whole life has been very much led by the fact that I have a handicap. I have a bad stammer. When I was a child it was much, much worse. And when you see me talk, it's worse. I have ticks in my face when I talk. I'm going to sing a song at the ASCAP event. It's not easier when I sing.'
Q: That's must be very difficult. How do you deal with it?
A: 'There was no specific remedy for it when I was a kid, so I never coped with it. I just had my mom's lap. I would sit on her lap and cry all the time. I'd be so embarrassed and afraid to go to school. When my nervous system was bad, my mom would just say 'Sing it.' I started living an opera beginning when I was 7. I would sing as much as I could or start tapping my hand on my thighs. As long as there was a rhythm, I could get through it.'
Q: You think it would have been easier now?
A: 'It's another thing that people didn't know that much about. If 'The King's Speech' had come out when I was in high school, then people would have had more understanding about stuttering.'
Q: Sounds like you've had some difficult times in spite of all your success.
A: 'I've had a very glorious and glamorous and wonderful life and a very scary and handicapped existence, which is promoted by fear. It's made for a very pointy edge on my fear knife. As a result, I could disappear from the scene or be open and talk about it so that people can identify with it.'
Q: What makes you happy these days?
A: 'I have a wonderful partner, a man who is a surgeon. He's a very Type A personality, but I can't imagine a surgeon not being that way. He's great. His name is Richard and he's handsome and he's brilliant and very dear and loving.'
Q: And how's your work?
A: 'I'm trying to spend the rest of the year getting completed with the book. I'm not sure how I'll sell it, either as a memoir or an autobiography. I have an agent. It seems like everyone is writing memoirs or everyone in the music business is. Hopefully, by the time mine comes it will have died down. But this is not as (crucial) as the writing of the story.'
Q: Does writing a book feel the same as writing a song?
A: 'Yes. It's like baking. Writing books is like a combination of writing a song and a letter. I love writing songs. It's my love.'

Tom Petty gets guitars back, security guard arrested

The five guitars - which included Petty's 1967, 12-string Rickenbacker made of maple - were reported stolen on Thursday from a sound studio in Culver City, west of Los Angeles, and the band announced it would pay a $7,500 reward for information leading to their recovery.
Daryl Washington, a 51-year-old security guard at the studio, was arrested on Monday and booked on suspicion of grand theft, police said.
Detectives got a tip one of the guitars was sold to a Hollywood pawn shop, police said.
'I am extremely grateful to the Culver City Police Department for a job well done and touched by the outpouring of good wishes and concern from our fans and friends,' Petty wrote on his Facebook page.
It was not immediately clear if anyone would collect the $7,500 no-questions asked reward for the return of the guitars.

Black Keys help conquer the cold at Coachella

Bieber told British radio station Capital FM in a recent interview that Swift was one of several people he had worked with on 'Believe.'
'I even wrote a song with Taylor Swift, so the whole album ranges differently,' Bieber said.

Police say Houston death not criminal, case closed
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Beverly Hills police said on Wednesday they had closed their investigation into the death of singer Whitney Houston in a hotel room bathtub two months ago after concluding no crime was committed.

'I'm a painter who plays guitar,' he said at the Broom Street Gallery in Soho, where around 50 of his paintings, sketches, and prints are showing until the end of June.
Most are colorful portraits of bandmates Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts, along with other celebrities such as Jerry Hall, formerly married to Jagger, and Muhammad Ali.
The pieces vary from early 1960s sketches to paintings of pop culture icons Wood has known and worked with at different stages of his career.

Detectives found white powdery substances, a rolled-up piece of paper, a small spoon and a mirror in the bathroom shortly after Houston's naked body was found face down in the bathtub on February 11, the 40-page Los Angeles County coroner's report said.
